THE STORY
Sky and Clay | Seattle
Conceived as a jewel box for daily rituals, this laundry room transforms utility into delight. Sea-glass blue cabinetry and Seattle-inspired San Juan Cement tile create a palette both serene and spirited, while richly textured microcement walls lend durability, depth, and drama. Terracotta accents introduce warmth and personality, turning practical moments into something more tactile and expressive. Thoughtfully planned for performance yet full of character, the space reflects our client who values beauty, individuality, and joy in the everyday.

What began as a purely utilitarian room was reimagined as a highly personal, high-performing space layered with character, color, and unexpected delight. Our client gravitates toward interiors with individuality and warmth, so from the outset, the goal was not simply to create a better laundry room, but to transform it into a space that feels expressive, tailored, and joyful to use. The design balances playful materiality with serious functionality, elevating everyday chores through thoughtful planning and a palette that feels both calming and spirited.

Seattle-inspired San Juan Cement tile sets the tone underfoot, introducing graphic rhythm and a sense of place, while sea-glass blue custom cabinetry softens the room with a calm, airy presence. Every cabinet was carefully tailored to the client’s storage needs, turning the room into a hardworking organizational hub. The tall cabinet conceals the vacuum cleaner and incorporates a built-in charging station, upper cabinets above the washer and dryer were designed extra deep to accommodate laundry baskets, and a magic corner cabinet makes the most of otherwise difficult-to-reach storage.
The countertops are crafted from highly sustainable, exceptionally durable Dekton, whose subtly textured surface adds another tactile layer to the room and feels beautifully aligned with its soulful, material-driven character. New LG washer and dryer units bring water and energy efficiency, while a durable Blanco Silgranit sink and modern Kohler faucet support the daily demands of use with equal parts resilience and refinement.

The defining gesture of the room is the black-and-white microcement wall treatment. Environmentally friendly, waterproof, and exceptionally durable, the finish introduces movement, depth, and a moody sense of drama that gives the space its emotional resonance. Terracotta colored cabinet pulls, lighting, and the dramatic sliding door add a warm counterpoint, injecting personality while also saving valuable floor area for the client.
A large window beside the tall cabinet brings in generous daylight, washing the work surfaces with natural light and softening the contrast of the darker microcement so the room feels at once grounded, luminous, and alive. The result is a laundry room that is as efficient as it is distinctive — practical at its core, yet unmistakably rich in character.
